You do not have to solve every benefit on day one. These steps protect timelines and stop preventable money problems while you grieve. Use the checklist below and print a copy for your binder if that helps.

Surviving spouse first steps after a veteran dies

Order several certified death certificatesBanks, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), insurance, and Social Security often each want an original.
Locate the DD-214 (or equivalent discharge papers)Also gather any recent VA rating decision letters. If you cannot find them, a free accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) can help request replacements.
Notify VA and DFASCall VA at 800-827-1000 and DFAS at 800-321-1080. Ask about the month-of-death payment and burial reviews. Also notify Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) and Social Security as needed.
Do not rush to close bank accountsDo not discard mail from VA or DFAS. Unexpected withdrawals or recalls are stressful - see the month-of-death payment guide before closing accounts.
Contact a free accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO)DAV, VFW, American Legion, or your county veterans service officer. Filing is free. Locator: va.gov/vso
Consider an Intent to File (VA Form 21-0966)Useful early if you will claim Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) or Survivors Pension - it can protect an effective date for up to one year while you gather documents. A VSO can file it with you.

Questions

Who do I call first?

Call the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) at 800-827-1000 to report the death. Also notify Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) at 800-321-1080 if the veteran received military retirement or Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), update Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) if applicable, and contact Social Security. These are separate systems.

Should I close the veteran's bank account right away?

Do not rush. The month-of-death payment and other deposits may still need a place to land or be reissued. Talk with a free accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) or the bank about joint accounts before closing anything.

Is anything automatic?

Some burial and month-of-death reviews can start from the death report alone. Most ongoing benefits such as Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) still require a claim (often VA Form 21P-534EZ). A free VSO can sort automatic vs claimed items with you.
